Simpox Continues
to Make Progress
As discussed in previous newsletters, the Institute continues to move forward on its CDC funded Simpox initiative. In case you are new to the Institute's Simpox effort, this project encompasses drills and scenarios for public health department assessment and training. This project also includes the development of a DVD which highlights the Institute's advanced multimedia capabilities. The DVD will use a local news reporter to broadcast simulated news reports that are designed to reflect actual newscasts in the event of a smallpox outbreak. Much like an actual newscast, the DVD broadcast will contain clues and subtle distinctions public health officials will need to ascertain in order to discern what type of public health concerns may be occurring. The DVD, in conjunction with CD-ROM and paper components, will all work together to produce a quality product that will effectively assess and increase public health preparedness.
The state-level exercise is completed and currently under CDC review, and was also sent to project contributors and consultants. After CDC review, the Institute will begin the process of incorporating the news clips and the interview with William Patrick to simulate a realistic smallpox scenario. Mr. Patrick, a leading expert on bioterrorism defense strategies since the mid-1970's, has made significant beneficial additions to the overall Simpox project.
The local-level exercise, as well as several tabletop exercises, are also completed and currently under editorial review.
