Program
Far Exceeded Expectations
The Master of Science in Biosecurity and Disaster
Preparedness program has far exceeded our initial expectations
for the program. Initial projections based on other Graduate education
programs estimated that we would have twenty students by the second
year of enrollment. We currently have 56 students (almost triple
our initial projections), with many inquiries and applications
arriving all the time.
We continue to enrol students with a broad
range of backgrounds and experiences, including professionals working
in public health at the local and state level, CDC Strategic National
Stockpile, Federal Bureau of Investigations, physicians, nurses,
local law enforcement, emergency management, emergency services,
and hospital disaster planners. In addition, our students currently
live across the United States (California to New York and everything
in between), and in other countries, including Honduras, South
Korea, and Australia. The depth and breadth of student interactions
in the online courses continues to grow as our current student
body gains knowledge and experienced individuals join our ranks.
Our faculty also continues to grow as we better adapt our teaching
skills to the online environment. Student feedback on content and
course delivery methods have been used to continuously update and
improve our online courses to enhance student learning.
Our
newest update to the program is to add a new degree option for
students. Saint Louis University School of Public Health now offers
a Biosecurity and
Disaster Preparedness area of concentration within the Master of Public Health
(MPH) program. This program begins this semester: Spring, 2007, and we already
have students enrolled. We are very excited about this program and hope that
it grows as the MS program has.
We also have
a number of students enrolled in other degree programs who are
also pursuing a Graduate Certificate in Biosecurity and Disaster
Preparedness. The Graduate Certificate offers students a chance
to gain knowledge in a specialized area without the large investment
required of a degree program. The 15 credit hour Certificate
enhances their current Graduate education and will aid in job
recruitment.
