Rachel Schwartz, PhD
With Grant Support from the Roche Corporation

Recent events have brought to the fore the importance of pandemic response plans tailored for individuals, businesses, State, Federal and Local agencies.  The Pandemic Response for Prisons and Jails Handbook is targeted at a population that often gets ignored by legislators and communities alike. However, because of the unique health and social issues faced by prison and jail inmates, as well as their staff and administrators, it is crucial to the welfare of correctional facilities and the communities where they are found that specific and actionable preparedness and response plans are in place.

This handbook addresses some of the unique circumstances faced by correctional facilities in dealing with pandemic Avian Influenza, taking into account the special populations involved, the availability of resources and training, the epidemiological realities of disease transmission and treatment in prisons and jails, and staff needs for training, support, and materiel.

The handbook also includes fact sheets on Avian Influenza, lessons learned from past pandemics, information on personal protective equipment (PPE), respiratory hygiene and cough etiquette, social distancing in correctional settings, algorithms for pandemic response, strategies for limiting absenteeism among workers during pandemic.  The Handbook contains a hard copy of Power Point training module, Action Checklist and other resources.
