In just a short time, the Saint Louis University Chess Team has risen to become one of the best in the nation.
Founded in 2015, the team is a partnership between the University and the Chess Club
and Scholastic Center of St. Louis.
The team currently has seven members — undergraduates Cemil Can Ali Marandi, Nozima Aripova, Dorsa Derakhshani, Francesco Rambaldi and Dariusz Swiercz, and graduate students Alexander Ipatov and Yaroslav Zherebukh — and recruitment efforts continue through donor-sponsored competitive chess scholarships, which can include room and board, tuition and fees.
Saint Louis University Chess Facilities
SLU’s chess team is headquartered on the ground floor of Morrisey Hall. The space serves as the main training space for the team and allows members open access to analyze the game using two powerful computers. In addition to weekly training sessions, players schedule individual trainings with team coach Alejandro Ramirez.
The chess facility also has four DGT electronic chess boards that allow team members to input plays as they study them.
